Some Cool Charts We Made in 2023


In 2023, The Xylom’s visual journalist team (of one) covered everything from "Cop City" to gun violence in the rural South, from "maladaptive" climate infrastructure in India to flooding in Nigeria. Inspired by a similar year-in-review piece from FiveThirtyEight, here are some of the most interesting — and weird and colorful and complicated — charts we made in the last 12 months.

Alex Ip

Alex is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Xylom, the only Asian American science newsroom in the United States. He covers the future of cities and environmental justice, with a focus on the American South and the Global South. His reporting surrounding false statements from the City of Atlanta regarding "Cop City" led him to being named the Atlanta Press Club's Rising Star in 2024. Born and raised in Hong Kong and being fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin, Alex also recently led a team to translate the KSJ Science Editing Handbook into Chinese (Traditional and Simplified). Alex holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Georgia Tech and master's degree in Science Writing from MIT.
