Welcome to The Xylom. These Terms of Use (the "Terms") govern your use of our website. The Xylom ("The Xylom," "we," "us," or "our") is an independent, nonprofit, worker-run newsroom with a focus on global health and environmental disparities. By visiting or using our site, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.
We've tried to write these Terms in plain language. Your use of The Xylom is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your information.
Using Our Site
You're welcome to read, link to, and share The Xylom's journalism. In using the site, you agree to:
- Use it only for lawful purposes
- Not attempt to disrupt, hack, or interfere with the site or its security
- Not use automated tools (bots, scrapers, crawlers) to harvest content or data without our permission
- Not impersonate The Xylom or misrepresent your affiliation with us
Our Content
The Xylom is a nonprofit newsroom, and we believe our journalism should reach as many readers as possible. Unless otherwise noted, our original stories are made available for free republication under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. In plain terms: you're welcome to republish our work. We ask for a few additional things specific to our newsroom — full details are in our republication terms.
Photos, video, and graphics. Images and video that ran with a Floodlight story may be republished alongside that story under the same terms. Standalone use of our photos, videos, or graphics — separate from the story they originally accompanied — is handled on a case-by-case basis. For those requests, email us at info@thexylom.com.
Content You Share with Us
If you send us a tip, story idea, letter, comment, or other feedback, you're giving The Xylom permission to use it in our reporting and on our platforms. Before using any information you submit in our reporting, we’ll review it, verify it, and make reasonable attempts to contact you. If you want to share information confidentially or as a source, please email us at info@thexylom.com.
Links to and from Our Site
Our site may include links to other websites. We provide these for convenience and context, but we don't control those sites and aren't responsible for their content, accuracy, or privacy practices. When you leave The Xylom, the destination site's terms and privacy policy apply.
You're welcome to link to The Xylom from your own site, as long as the link doesn't suggest a false affiliation or cast The Xylom in a misleading light. Please don't frame our content inside another site.
Disclaimer
We work hard to publish accurate, thoroughly reported, and fact-checked journalism. That said, the site and its content are provided "as is." We don't make any guarantees — express or implied — about the availability of the site or its content or that the content of this site is error-free.
We take reasonable steps to keep the site secure, but we can't guarantee it will always be free of viruses, errors, or interruptions. We're not responsible for any damage that results from using the site or downloading material from it.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent allowed by law, The Xylom and its staff, contributors, board members, and partners are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the site, including damages from errors, omissions, interruptions, or your reliance on any content.

Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "Effective date" at the top. Your continued use of the site after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
